Tokyo, Kyoto and southern traverse of the Japanese Alps

This crossing of the southern part of the Japanese Northern Alps is one of the most demanding treks in the country. You will discover the landscapes of the Japanese high mountains with their preserved ecosystem. The trek includes several ascents of peaks close to 3,000 meters.

First steps in the capital
Jour 3 : Tokyo

You meet your Tokyo guide who spends the morning introducing you to the diverse facets of the capital. Your luggage is transferred to the hotel in Kyoto and you only take your trekking gear with you for the duration of the tour in the Japanese Alps. You take the train to Matsumoto to meet Samuel, your hiking guide. Jour 4 : Matsumoto

To start the day, we visit the magnificent Matsumoto Castle, a remnant of the feudal era.We then set off to explore the country's largest wasabi farm, before discovering a traditional sake brewery. In the afternoon, we travel to Nakabusa Onsen, the starting point of the trek. • Visits to Matsumoto Castle, the wasabi farm and the sake brewery • Transport : transport by private vehicle between Matsumoto, the wasabi farm and the sake brewery transfer between Matsumoto and Nakabusa Onsen (approximately 1 hour) • Meals : breakfast, lunch and dinner • Night : mountain hut

Matsumoto
Jour 5 : Nakabusa onsen → Enzanso

Our trek begins with a steady climb through the forest to the Enzanso refuge. The first panoramic views of the Alpine ranges reveal Japan's high mountains, landscapes that will characterise the coming days. After a break at the refuge, we continue on to Mount Tsubakuro, with its evocative granite rocks. • Ascent: 1,300 m, Descent: 0 m (4½ to 5 hours walking) • Meals : breakfast, lunch and dinner • Night : mountain hut

Nakabusa onsen → Enzanso
Jour 6 : Enzanso → Nishidake

The trek continues along a splendid ridge line with views of Mount Yarigatake, the highest point of the next day's stage. During the day, we may encounter macaques, as a colony is established at the foot of Mount Jounen. For those willing to extend the hike, we will continue to the summit of Nishidake and enjoy its panoramic view. • Ascent: 450 m / Descent: 470 m (5 to 5½ hours' walking) • Meals : breakfast, lunch and dinner • Night : mountain hut

Enzanso → Nishidake
Jour 7 : Nishidake → Yarigatake

This stage requires our full attention to approach the highest point of the route, as it includes a few rocky sections (ladders and handrails). We reach the characteristic granite rocks of Mount Yarigatake, the fifth highest peak of the archipelago. If the conditions are favourable, we will climb to the summit at 3,180 m. • Ascent: 600 m / Descent: 230 m (5½ to 6 hours walking) • Meals : breakfast, lunch and dinner • Night : mountain hut

Nishidake → Yarigatake
Jour 8 : Yarigatake → Sugoroku

This stage takes us to the heart of the Japanese Alps with breathtaking panoramic views. It includes a few sections with handrails along the ridge. We walk along the caldera, and its sulphurous vapours remind us of the volcanic activity of Japan. We stay at the cosy Sugoroku mountain lodge. • Ascent: 250 m / Descent: 700 m (4½ to 5 hours walking) • Meals : breakfast, lunch and dinner • Night : mountain hut

Yarigatake → Sugoroku
Jour 9 : Sugoroku → Shinhotaka onsen

We come back to the valley after five days of hiking at an altitude of over 2,500 meters. During the descent, we pass through alpine vegetation with lakes and rivers. The return to civilisation is a gentle one, and we enjoy the Japanese hot springs, known as ‘onsen’, in a beautiful mountain hut. • Ascent: 150 m Descent: 1,550 m (6½ to 7 hours walking) • Meals : breakfast, lunch and dinner • Night : lodge

Sugoroku → Shinhotaka onsen
Jour 10 : Discover Kamikochi and spend the night in Kyoto

Coach transfer to Kamikochi village and discovery of the “capital” of the Japanese Alps. Return to Kyoto by coach and check-in at the hotel. Free arrangement for lunch. • Transport : transfers from Nakabusa Onsen to Kamikochi, then from Kamikochi to Kyoto • Meals : breakfast and dinner • Night : hotel
