This crossing of the southern part of the Japanese Northern Alps is one of the most demanding treks in the country. You will discover the landscapes of the Japanese high mountains with their preserved ecosystem. The trek includes several ascents of peaks close to 3,000 meters.

You meet your Tokyo guide who spends the morning introducing you to the diverse facets of the capital. Your luggage is transferred to the hotel in Kyoto and you only take your trekking gear with you for the duration of the tour in the Japanese Alps.Your hiking guide will accompany you on the Japanese high-speed train (Shinkansen) to Toyama. To start the day, we arrive in Oritate, the starting point of our trek. The first stage begins with a climb through dense forest.We also pass through varieties of sasa bamboo and reach the Tarodaira refuge located on the plateau.We observe the surrounding peaks (Yakushidake, Kurobegorodake) and continue on to the Yakushizawa refuge nestled by the river. ● Transport : transfer between Toyama and Oritate (approximately 1½ hour) ● Ascent : 990 m / Descent : 430 m (6 to 6½ hours’ walking) ● Meals : breakfast, picnic and dinner ● Night : mountain hut
We make our way through the valley, following the river through wooded areas and among the rocks along the riverbank. Leaving the river at the bottom of the valley behind, we begin the climb through increasingly lush vegetation, a veritable tropical forest with steep slopes.In the early afternoon, we reach the plateau where the Takamagahara hut is located.We then take advantage of the natural hot spring to recharge our batteries before sharing a traditional meal at the mountain hut. ● Ascent : 400 m / Descent : 200 m (4½ to 5 hours’ walking) ● Meals : breakfast, picnic and dinner ● Night : mountain hut
At the start of the stage, we encounter the dense vegetation of the tropical forest before climbing up to the Warimo pass at 2,800 meters. We continue our climb along the ridges to the volcanic summit of Washiba, perched at 2,925 meters and offering a splendid 360° view. After the picnic, we start the descent to the Mitsumata hut, famous throughout the Alps for its delicious coffee ! ● Ascent : 820 m / Descent : 400 m (5 to 5½ hours’ walking) ● Meals : breakfast, picnic and dinner ● Night : mountain hut
This fourth stage is a transition day. It first takes us to the summit of Mitsumata, then Sugoroku, perched at 2,860 meters, before reaching the mountain hut of the same name. ● Ascent : 350 m / Descent : 300 m (2½ to 3 hours’ walking) ● Meals : breakfast, picnic and dinner ● Night : mountain hut
A magnificent stage along the ridges to reach the Yarigatake hut, with stunning landscapes and passages that demand your full attention. If conditions are favourable, we will climb Mount Yarigatake, at an altitude of 3,180 meters, the fifth highest peak in the archipelago. ● Ascent : 700 m Descent : 240 m (4½ to 5 hours’ walking) ● Meals : breakfast, picnic and dinner ● Night : mountain hut
The start of the stage requires our full attention with a few technical sections, requiring the use of our hands and nimble feet. First, we climb up to the Daitenso mountain hut to admire the view of the Jonendake mountain range towards the Kamikochi valley. At the start of the day, we visit the magnificent Matsumoto Castle, a remnant of the feudal era.We then set off to explore the country's largest wasabi farm, before discovering a traditional sake brewery. In the afternoon, we arrive in Kyoto.
